Day 40: Fashion!
Sigh. Now I actually have to do math to figure out how many days it has been since I started my No Buy Year.
While my December attempt may not have been perfect, I'm pleased I had that "dress rehearsal" to prime me for all the January temptations. It's embarrassing to think that I am daily tempted to browse shopping sites, but that's just the reality. I'm getting better, though – I really am. Still far from perfect but I've noticed that I am browsing less. I haven't paid attention to a certain orange retailer's winter sale. But I am still aware there's a sale. Again, work in progress.
I did buy clothes today, though. It was planned. I'm refreshing my work wardrobe now that I have to be in person every day instead of mostly remote. I'm still struggling to find pants that fit properly so I'm trying out a few new fits and sizes. But I only purchased what I planned – the work 'fit refresh and some casual loungewear. Nothing just because it was on clearance and I might like it. Nothing that I thought was cute but wouldn't work on my body shape.
I know who I am. I know what my fashion taste is. I know what colors work best for me. I know that I will never be trendy but at least I can try to be classic. Or forgettable. My daily outfit is pretty much my uniform. I dress boring so I don't have to waste time (or precious executive function beans) worrying about what to wear each day.
And no one cares! I'm old enough that no one is expecting me to be trendy. I live in a place that thinks jeans and a fleece vest are dressed up.
This does mean I feel a sense of impending doom when contemplating my closet and all the clothes I no longer wear but still think I might one day. I really need to go through them. Make more room for the clothes I actually wear that end up just draped in the laundry room and never actually make it to the closet.
That's too much for me right now.
But I think I will get there one day. Provided I stop buying clothes.
But not today.
Because today I purchased 17 new items of clothes. All items I know I will use (okay, maybe the Christmas themed leggings purchased on clearance may only see use a few days of the year, but they will still bring me joy!).
So maybe then I can find 17 items of old clothes that I will never use again.
Hmmm. It's a good challenge – in theory. But I'm not sure I ready to pull the trigger yet.
